TULLOG PATTERN DAY

The old village of Tullog contained as many houses and people as the village of Stamullen in the early 19th century. Tullog is, in itself, one of the 17 townlands which make up the parish of Stamullen; the old village of which was located on the former coach road between Clinstown Cross and the village of Naul in Co. Dublin. A village-green that once stood here is als remembered in the localised placename of the `Merry Corner`. The village contained a number of corn, flour and tuck mills in the later 18th and early 19th century, along with a forge, a hedge-school, a chapel and a cemetery. The annual Pattern Day was held each year at Tullog old graveyard on the Sunday closest to the date of July 29th .

LÚNASA FESTIVAL Duleek PILGRIMAGE TO KNOCK

One of the four major annual Celtic Festivals that was held throughout ancient Ireland. This particular festival was held n August 1st every year and it was an agrarian feast held in honour of the harvesting of the crops. In mythological terms, Lúnasa also represented the great Sun God Lugh and the festival f Lúnasa was introduced to Ireland by Lugh to commemorate his foster Mother Tailtu; it is from this name that we have the great name of the past Óenach Tailten, or the Festival of Teltown in Co. Meath.

Some early records state that this harvest festival was held over a period of 15 days. It was a time for celebrating in rural districts up to within living memory in many parts f Ireland. Once the harvest had been reaped, gathered and stored, it was now time for the summer games to begin, food was also in abundance and matrimony was on the minds of the young men and the fair maidens. It was also at this time when the `corn-dollies` were made; the first doll being made from the last sheaf of wheat from the first crop harvested, while the last man from within the community to reap his crop would be then presented with that particular corn dolly which he had to keep for the following year and, nobody wanted to be the person who had to hang on to the doll, for many believed it to be of bad luck. Today, many of the rural village summer festivals are a direct `throw-back` to the ancient festival games of Ireland`s ancient past and this particular year, 2018, resembles that type of feeling with the huge amount of great weather and plenty of sunshine that we have been having since April. The harvest festival of August 1st is also commemorated approximately mid-way between the Summer Solstice and the Autumnal Equinox.
