Furze boys gain home advantage for semis

-

SENESCHALSTOWN O’MAHONY’S 3-17 0-13

BOTH these sides had already qualified for the knockout stages, but it was Seneschalstown who finished as group winners and will have home advantage in the semi-final following this victory in the MFC on Sunday.

O’Mahonys ended winners when the teams clashed earlier in the league and they started the more promising of the two sides, carving out chances but ultimately unable to take them.

The sides exchanged points in the opening passages before Jamie Kirwan opened his account for Seneschalstown with a point, and he then added a goal for good measure after a Tom Barron attempt had been blocked.

Boosted by those scores Seneschalstown continued to have the edge for the remainder of the half and at half-time led 1-9 to 0-5. Sean Commons shot some excellent points in that opening half while Joseph Moore was also in fine form in the Seneschalstown attack.

O’Mahonys made a promising start to the second half with a number of points, but Commons and Moore kept the scoreboard ticking over for the Yellow Furze outfit.

The town side were still in contention until Tom Barron connected with a long delivery to flick the ball to the net to leave his side 10 points clear.

From there to the finish Seneschalstown remained a safe distance in front, with Woodley Nicholson, Ross Mullen, Sean Commons, Jamie Kirwan and Alan Carey all adding to the tally, while midfielder Podge Finnegan raised another green flag. SENESCHALSTOWN: Cathal Darby; Josh Ryan, Simon Rooney, Will Finnegan; Kit Waddington, Woodley Nicholson 0-1, Cillian Lawlor; James O’Hare, Podge Finnegan 1-0; Ross Mullen 0-1, Sean Commons 0-8, Joseph Moore 0-3; Jamie Kirwan 1-2, Tom Barron 1-1, Jeaic Timmons. Subs: Conor McDonnell for W Finnegan, Donal Commons for Barron, Alan Carey 0-1 for Mullen, Tom Smith for Ryan.
