Hard-earned point after a ‘Torr’id night

-

ALBION ROVERS TORRO UNITED 1 1

A FAILED claim for a penalty turned into a double whammy for Albion Rovers when Torro United grabbed a late equaliser in this hard-fought Division 1 game at Muirdeach’s Park last Thursday night.

However, the point means Albion still remain unbeaten at home under their manager Pat Mohan since the start of last season in August 2017.

The Monasterboice side started brighter, with Austin McCann and Shane Lowney spraying the ball left and right to Sam Kelly and Niall Smyth who had the beatings of both Torro full-backs in the opening exchanges.

The first chance came when Austin McCann played Evan Corlett in behind the Torro back four and Corlett got to the endline and crossed for the onrushing Stephen Martin who couldn’t reach the ball with an outstretched leg.

That sense of frustration was forgotten on the half-hour mark after some great work down the left by Ian Cusack and then Smyth, and the latter squared towards Corlett who finished to the bottom corner from the edge of the box. Torro were limited to shots from distance as the centre-half pairing of Helder Mota and Eoin McDonnell were in fine form, winning every ball that came their way.

The second half changed a little as Torro got more into the match, but Albion were still comfortable, with full-backs Karl Harding and Cusack finding themselves in a lot of space as Torro played a very narrow game.

On 70 minutes there was an offtheincident in which young Karl Harding suffered a gash on the top of his nose and had to be replaced.

There was anger in the Albion ranks when, in their view, Torro’s centre-forward clearly shoved Cusack to the ground inside the box, but the referee wasn’t convinced and shortly after Torro were back on level terms when Andy Tolan squared to Peader Farrelly who toe-poked the ball home.

The visitors were reduced to 10 men when Tolan got a second booking and Albion had one last chance to win the game when Corlett got to the endline and his deflected low cross resulted in a fine save by the Torro keeper. ALBION ROVERS: N McDonnell, K Harding (R Kinch), I Cusack, H Mota, E McDonnell, A McCann, S Kelly, S Lowney (G Maher), E Corlett, S Martin (C McQuillan), N Smyth.
