Boyne in buoyant mood

-

THERE was plenty for the host club to cheer as Boyne AC hosted their annual Boyne 5K on Sunday, in memory of the late Harry Mallon and Willie Connor.

With 400 runners taking part in the main race, this year there was the added bonus of a 3k family fun run that attracted another hundred people, with many a happy face crossing the finish line in both events.

Boyne AC had a great representation of runners across both races, with Tadgh Everitt Thompson winning the Junior Men’s category and Cliodhna Nolan taking the top honours in the Junior Ladies category over the 5k distance.

The men’s team won the Willie Connor Cup for first team (Andrew White, Tadgh Everitt Thompson, Neil Culhane and Danny Nugent), and Boyne AC’s ladies finished second team overall thanks to the efforts of Catherine Tiernan, Cliodhna Nolan and Meadbh Nolan).

A successful Couch to 5k programme also saw more than 15 new Boyne AC members take on the challenge and conquer it in style, under the expert coaching of Christine Kennedy and Catherine Tiernan Bell.

With perfect weather and a record attendance, the event attracted huge numbers from many local clubs and some much further afield, along with many staff members from the Lourdes Hospital who were running to raise money for thier various units, and local runners and families all out to enjoy the day.

The overall winner was Shane Lynch from Glenmore AC in a super time of 16:51, with Peter Meegan of Dunleer AC second in 17:31 and Wesley Harrison from Sportsworld AC third (17:34).

The ladies winner was Niamh Devlin in a time of 18:40, followed by Lauren Murphy from Cilles AC in 19:35 and Aoife Parrella from Star of the Sea AC in 20:27).
