ST. Brigid’s Drama Group was first initiated on an autumnal night of the year 1948 when a prepaid advertisement placed in the Drogheda Independent led to a gathering, in what was then known as Clifford’s Café, now Mc Allister’s electrical shop in West St.
The people attracted to attend this meeting were interested in being part of a new drama group in the town which would be a social outlet for the long winter nights that lay ahead.
It is unlikely that anyone there had envisaged that what they were engaged in would still be a vibrant amateur drama group, enriching the cultural life of the town on an annual basis, seven decades later.
But so it is that this year, St. Brigid’s Drama Group is celebrating its 70th anniversary and its present committee is looking forward to doing so.
At its recent AGM members discussed a variety of ideas on how this particular year could be given due, added significance along with the raison d’etre of the group’s yearly programme, that of presenting a stimulating dramatic production for its audiences.
Interest has already been declared for directing this year’s production but the door is still open until the end of this week for other submissions (email, stbrigidramagroupdrogheda@gmail.com or phone 0857279080). A committee meeting will follow next week to further clarify the plans for the coming season.
St. Brigid’s have always had a policy of welcoming new members and any interested drama enthusiasts to its ranks.
Also former members wishing to rekindle that dramatic urge, in whatever capacity whether it be acting, stage crew or any part of the production team, are most welcome to reconnect with the group.
More information on the group can be accessed on the group’s Facebook page.
One of the proposed ideas also emerging from the AGM was a social get together of members past and present for an evening of re-acquaintance and reminiscence and a date of Friday, February 1st, 2019 (St. Brigid’s Day!) was strongly favoured for such an occasion.
People interested in being part of organising such a gathering, especially former members from previous decades, would also be most welcome to make contact with the group
