Andy Whelan and his table tennis aces
Sept 1968
THAT the club should consider itself extremely fortunate in having as one of its members a star of such international repute was stated by Mr. Andy Whelan, chairman, Gormanston Table Tennis Club, at their first annual meeting on Saturday.
Mr. Whelan, who was referringthe interest shown by Irish international Tommy Caffrey, said he was pleased with the decision of the club in electing Tommy their president. His presence alone, continued Mr. Whelan, would be of inestimable value and indeed an inspiration to many of their Junior players. He added that Tommy’s advice and guidance were always readily available.
Almost 60 Continuing, he said the club had a membership of almost 60 players, out of which three teams had competed in the Leinster League, and while they had been unsuccessful here, they should bear in mind that they were a comparatively young club, and the experience they had gained would be invaluable. The club itself had run 38 tournaments, for which they themselves had put up medals and trophies. This, he concluded, stimulated interest and would be the practice in future.
The following officers were elected for the coming year: President, Tommy Caffrey; chairman, A. Whelan; secretarytreasurer. Mrs. O. O’Farrell. Committee: J. Gough, O. Farrell, R. Carolan, H. Finn, S. Porter and M. Carolan.
