Nicky Colgan and Gary Kelly on their way to trial with West Ham United

TWO local boys, Nlcky Colgan (left) from Brookvllle and Gary Kelly from Marian Park wlll make a dream trlp to Upton Park, the home of Engllsh Second Dlvlsion slde West Ham Unlted In early July for a week long trlal.

Colgan wlll be continulng hls relationsh­lp with the East London club as he travelled over some time ago for a weekend and played in one Junlor game.

But for Kelly, one of the tremendous prospects of the Drogheda Boys set up at the moment, it’s all new but

he’s sure to grab the opportunlt­y with both hands.

The duo will train wlth the West Ham Junlor slde under the guldance of Bllly Bonds and his back room boys and by the end of the seven days wlll possible know their future with the club, although a trlp back later in the summer could result.

Colgan needs no Introducti­on at this stage. Already much travelled with the Republic of Ireland U/16 side he had gained valuable experience worklng with Drogheda United in recent seasons and just needs the big break.

Kelly is one of the most lethal strikers in Dublin Schoolboys football at the moment. A regular in the

Drogheda Boys U/16 side he fitted well Into the U/17’s at times last year and even hlt four goals in the final game of the season against the might of Belvedere.

Admired greatly for his skill on the ball and superb leadership, he helped his school side St. Oliver’s Community College to three flnals thls season. He scored twice in the Leinster Cup defeat of Tullow. Colgan is also part of the team. He was also honoured with selection as sportstar of the year at St. Oliver’s.

Both boys were informed of the trip by the West Ham scout in Dublin. The only other player from the area called to West Ham was Ian Douglas of United. June 1990
