Bid for Dunleer CCTV project after success of Duleek plan
CALLS have been made for a local community group to take on a plan for introducing CCTV in Dunleer.
The debate arose at the Joint Policing Meeting in the Grove when a series of anti-social behaviour issues were raised, along with an appeal for more gardai for the town.
People drinking on the street during the day has become a real scourge to those living on the Ardee Road, it was revealed.
‘ They are jumping in front of cars and the gardai know about it,’ one worried resident stated.
Drinking in the children’s playground was also raised. ‘Beechwood Drive is a mature estate now and people there are afraid of their lives with incidents in the playground,’ they stated.
Chief Supt Christy Mangan said that they are trying to get more resources for Dunleer and a sergeant takes up duty there on October 16th.
He was then told that Duleek has CCTV and could the same be done for Dunleer.
‘ That is a community initiative in Duleek and I welcome them. It is good for crime prevention and there is funding for it. It would be very good,’ the Chief Supt stated.
Meanwhile, at last week’s Laytown/ Bettystown area meeting in Duleek, Supt Fergus Dwyer of the Ashbourne district addressed councillors and stated that it was planned to put a CCTV system into Julianstown as well.
Cllr Sharon Keogan, who championed the Duleek project, said it would be good news for the community there.
‘It has been a great success for Duleek and it will make a massive impact in Julianstown.
‘Maybe the criminals will decide to stay out of the area now,’ she stated.
‘I understand data protection, but this is there to protect people.’
She feels that all the laws are in place in respect of data protection, but Cllr Wayne Harding warned that barristers would see if everything ‘is in place.’
