Call to buy Narrow West St properties for tenants

- By ALISON COMYN

CLLR Pio Smith maintains an obvious solution to easing homelessness in Drogheda is right under our noses, or rather, right in our main street.

At the recent meeting of Drogheda members of Louth County Council, he proposed that derelict buildings in Narrow West Street could be turned into viable housing units, encouraging people to return to living in the town centre/

“The Council need to implement their powers of CPO in Narrow West Street in order to address and reverse the dereliction in the area,” he stated. “It is within the powers of Louth County Council to purchase derelict buildings and convert the first, second and third floors into apartments and lease out the ground floor for business purposes.”

The Labour councillor believes this would allow families to be taken off the social housing list and have the added advantage of bringing life back into the area.

Other members of the council agreed with the motion, saying the council could set an example.

“This could revitalise West Street again, bringing new life to the street,” agreed Cllr David Saurin. “I’m sure everyone would welcome some work being done.”

In adding his voice of support, Cllr Oliver Tully said new and existing planning applications should be examined.

“Four buildings in Narrow West Street have had planning permission granted and sitting on an application prevents housing from being developed,” he said.

“It would be good to have people living overheard, but no one wants to live over a night club.”

Louth County Council said in reply that Section 11 notices have been served on two properties in Narrow West Street but the requirements have not been complied with by the owners.

In addition, a Dangerous Buildings Notice has also been served on one of these properties. The condition of the building is being ‘monitored constantly’.
