DROGHEDA UNITED DERRY CITY
DROGHEDA United Under-15s secured a mid-table finish to their SSE Airtricity League season after winning their final game at home to Derry City at a sunny United Park on Sunday afternoon.
The Boynesiders had a high percentage of possession in the first half, playing the ball well out of defence and fighting tenaciously in midfield, but too often they hesitated or took the wrong option in front of goal.
They almost opened the scoring in the second minute when Aaron Murphy sent over a great cross from the right and Ruari Kinsella was unlucky to see his shot turned around the post for a corner.
On 16 minutes Tadgh Connolly turned infield beautifully from the right wing, leaving the Derry defence wrong-footed, but his excellent shot flew just wide.
On 28 minutes keeper Antonio Ignat got down well to smother a good Derry shot, and for all their pressure the Drogs went in still at 0-0 at half-time.

Derry came more into the game in the second half and, from a dangerous cross it looked like the visitors were about to take the lead, only for Jack Crowe to miraculously clear the ball off the line.
The Candystripes continued to attack, they hit the post on 50 minutes and for the next quarter of an hour it was anyone’s game.
However, on 71 minutes the Drogs broke through following good work on the left by Sean Buchanan and Owen Murphy, and Tadgh Connolly finished the resulting cross to the net.
Michael Burns had a great opportunity to add to the lead six minutes later, only to screw his shot wide, but with time almost up captain Aaron Naughton made it 2-0 with an expertly taken penalty.
