‘More heartache for Horgan’s Town

A LATE flourish from Drogheda Town was in vain as they suffered yet another narrow defeat in the Leinster Senior League in Bray last Friday night.

After a couple of recent losses, including one four nights earlier, manager Robbie Horgan started with a 5-4-1 formation to keep things tight against an Ardmore side who won this fixture 4-1 last season.

That tactic seemed to be paying off as the game entered first-half injury time still on level terms, but the referee went on to play four minutes and in the final seconds an Ardmore player finished to the net after Town had failed to clear their lines from a corner kick.

Worse was to follow for Town when, in the first minute of the second half, they conceded again after a favourable bounce of the ball for Ardmore.

Horgan was forced to make changes then and he went 3-4-3 in the hope of salvaging something for the game.

That scenario became more likely in the 75th minute when an Ardmore player handled the ball on the goal-line and was duly sent off, with substitute Andrew Tinley converting the resulting penalty for 2-1.

However, despite playing against 10 men for the last 15 minutes, Town were unable to haul themselves onto level terms.

They now turn their attentions to the FAI Junior Cup where they have a third-round tie coming up this week.
