THE battle for the last Murphy’s Meigh sponsored Silver Medal and a place in the final 8 to contest for the gold medal produced some great scoring but in the end by his own admission the ‘greatest no 1 of all time’ Benny Tierney (11) despite a hiccup at his penultimate hole went round the course 2 over Par which gave him another winners medal.

Benny’s nett 61 had him 2 shots clear of second placed Paul Lambert (18) with Colin McParland (13) taking third place on the countback from Fintan McAleenan (15) after both returned 64’s. Daniel Hughes (6) was the winner of the Gross.

Single figures then for Benny as these new irons are beginning to sparkle and he will be favourite to land the Gold Medal on Sunday week as he lines up alongside previous Monthly Medal winners, March-James Maguire April-Club Captain Paddy Malone May-Martin Gill June-Joe Hassard July-Larry O Rourke August-Paul Owens September-Anthony O’Hare.

With his fellow students making the golfing headlines over the past few weeks their mate Cormac Smyth (12) decided that he was not going to be left out of the limelight. Cormac just touched off in a few competitions finally made the winners enclosure as he took the October Singles Stableford with 42 points. Colin Pilkington (2) was runner-up with 39 pts which was one better than third placed Martin Gill (20).

NOEL Reid (13) took full advantage of perfect weather conditions to win Sunday’s Singles Stableford competition, with his 21 points down the back nine enough to pip David Murden (9) on countback after both carded rounds of 39pts.

Reid got off to the perfect start with a birdie three for four points on the first hole and although he only picked up one point from the two par fives he managed to cover the front nine in 18pts.

Three consecutive pars at the 11th, 12th and 13th yielded eight points and he also managed to pick up another eight points as he parred the final three holes on his way to a back nine return of 21pts and signed for an overall score of 39pts.

Murden had the consolation of taking Cateogry 1 from Damien Garland (7) who shot 38pts while Paddy Duffy (13) took Category 2 with 36pts despite playing with an ice cold putter. Aaron Waite (13) finished second in Category 2 with 35pts. Colm Garvey (20) shot 36pts to take Category 3 by one point from Seán Quigley while Sean Hession (4) returned the best gross and Rory Henry (23) was the Juvenile prize winner.
