SIX keenly contested matches produced a high standard of play in front of a great attendance as Greenhills Bowls Club kicked off the popular singles championship over nine ends under IIBA rules last Thursday night.

In a rollercoaster first match between Sean Donnelly and Gertie Griffin, Gertie stamped her authority on the game from the start and led until the spirited Sean eventually squared the match with one end to play.

And with some excellent backhand draw shots, Sean ultimately snatched victory by one shot in what was a very entertaining game.

Match two featured the hot favourite Jimmy Flood against Eugene McKenna and Jimmy stormed into a four-shot lead after two ends, only for Eugene to find his form and eventually cut the gap down to one in the sixth end.

Jimmy was on the ropes at that stage but varied his play by calling for a middle jack and it paid handsome dividends as he went six up at one stage before finishing with a four-shot margin.

Tom Devin trailed by three shots in the early stages against Frances Fleming but eventually turned it around to lead by three after six ends, only to fall one behind with just two ends remaining. However, Tom took control of the last two ends and won in impressive fashion by four shots.

In the fourth match Tommy Mc Guinness produced the performance of the night to overcome John Hurley by five shots.

He led by that distance after three ends, and although John got the deficit back to one with five ends completed, he could never gain parity and Tommy put on the afterburners in a big way in the latter stages.

Alice Leonard trailed throughout her game against Aileen Fitzgerald but kept battling and picked up one shot from the last end to force an extra end.

After a coin toss Aileen was put in first to play and once again they found herself in the driving seat, holding three shots at one stage. That wasa until Alice fired her last bowl into a full head to take the game by a single shot.

In the last match of the night two experience stalwarts took on one another and Peter Woods was all square with Jack Howell after four ends.

Peter hit a purple patch at the half-way stage, though, and held off a battling Jack to emerge the victor by two shots, and he is the favourite to take the singles title.

Times of play are Tuesday 7 to 8.15pm for juveniles and Tuesday and Thursday from 8.15 to 10.30pm for seniors.
