Duleek road row

-

A proposal by Meath County Council to narrow the Main Street in Duleek has been described by local councillors as a ‘childish and dangerous way to reduce speeding in the town’.

And the people of Duleek have rejected out of hand the proposals by the County Council saying it would create chaos.

Colr. Gerry Marry who attended an area meeting last week was outraged by the plans drawn up by County Council officials.

Duleek people had presumed that road markings in the main street put down in recent weeks were part of the upgrading of the main street and footpaths.

But when councillors attended the meeting last week they were told of the proposals to narrow the road from 9.2 metres to 6 metres. The council say it would help fight the problem of traffic speeding through the main street.

Coir. Marry said there was a problem of speed but added: ‘ This is a childish and dangerous way of dealing with it.’ Reducing the width of the street would also lead to parking difficulties, he said.

Last year some of the footpaths in the street were upgraded and councillors are now demanding that the rest of the work be carried out as planned.

‘Officials will have to look at it again. Because this will not go ahead in Duleek, it is just fantasy. The people would never allow it.’
