St.Oliver’s TeachersShine atFéilte2018
The Teaching Council’s annual Festival of Education in Learning and Teaching Excellence FÉILTE took place at Mary Immaculate College in Limerick last weekend. Féilte celebrates the wonderful work that teachers do every day in their classrooms and gives teachers the opportunity to collaborate and share this work with each other and with the wider public. St.Oliver’s Community College were doubly represented with two Showcase Stands, as well as presenting at Teach Meets in the main Hall.
The first stand belonged to Sinéad Kelly and Sarah Kiernan. Sinead has developed ‘ hexagon linkages’ and how they impact on learning. Sinead said, “Using hexagons makes student learning visible allowing six opportunities to ‘ link’. The use of hexagons encourages students learning to move from a lower order of thinking to a higher order, which deepens understanding”.
The second stand belonged the schools Deputy Principal Ian Gardiner and Tony O’Callaghan. They have developed a series of copies and notebooks that they hope will help students develop their learning, promote best practice amongst teachers and encourage high quality formative feedback to students and parents/guardians. The Deeper Learning Series are designed to cater for both the Primary and Post Primary sectors includes the Deeper Learning Copy, Deeper Learning Copy-Project Maths, Deeper Learning Notebook for the new Junior Cycle including CBA’s, the Deeper Learning Notebook for Leaving Cert and the Better Learning Copy for the Primary sector. The team met the President Michael D. Higgins who was fascinated to see how a simple copy could evolve to become such a valuable learning tool.
