Boyne athletes achieve a superb one-two finish

SHOLA Lawrence and Chloe Cooney achieved a superb one-two finish for Boyne in their event at the Athletics Leinster Uneven-Age Cross-County Championsh­ips, held in a very wet and windy Wexford on Sunday.

Battling the elements, the U-9s got things off to a good start in the non-championsh­ip 500m race, where Nathan Robertson finished in the medals in 10th place.

The championsh­ip proper then began with the U-11 Girls 1500m, where the super-talented Sholah crossed the finish line in first place, followed by her clubmate Chloe who was running out of age. With Kate Culhane 32nd, the girls finished fourth county team.

The U-11 Boys were next to run, with Lorcan Forde Dunne finishing in a fine fourth place and Alex Robertson also securing a medal in 11th, while Tadgh Forde Dunne and Luca McLoughlin both ran well also.

In the U-13 Girls 2,500m race, Eimear Cooney had a great run out of age to finish eighth and was part of the second county team, with Isabella Garcia, Ella Mcloughlin and Allie Garcia all running well too.

Shea O’Donnell ran well out of age in the U-13 Boys 2,500m to finish eighth, and with Paddy Price 27th and Caelan Quinn 33rd - all part of the fourth county team) and Emmet McEvoy 63rd, Boyne were also the fourth club team.

The U-15 Girls had a tough 3,500m to run, with Lily Cummins crossing the line in 13th place, followed by Anna Faulkner in 20th, Roisin Kennedy in 26th (all part of second county team) and Eabha Cosgrove in 42nd to make up the second club team. Meadbh Nolan, Eadaoinn Carroll and Saran Meite all ran well also.

The sole Boyne competitio­r in the U-15 Boys 3,500m was Neil Culhane, who finished 31st in a tough, competitiv­e field, while in the U-17 Girls 4,000m Cliodhna Nolan ran superbly to finish in 18th place overall.

The final race of the day saw Tom Cummins compete in the Boys U-17 event, finishing in a fine 10th place overall, and he also helped the Louth team to take second county team.
