Political will has to be there to end the toll charges in country

-

Dear Sir,

In reply to your story last week about road tolls.

Ged Nash likes to protest about road tolls to Minister Ross. For him this is an easy thing to do. Convincing his Labour party to adopt a toll free policy is a harder thing to do. But it is what his constituents need him to do.

Road tolls will disappear when political parties want them to. Road tolls will disappear after the next general election if the parties entering government have ‘ toll free’ policies in their election manifesto. This is what our local representatives should be working on!

Ged Nash is a big wheel in a tiny political party. Labour only has 12 representatives in the Dáil and Seannad. Why can’t he propose ‘ toll free’ policy to his party?

No political party, including my own, has a national toll free policy. If Ged Nash is unwilling to change Labour party policy towards road tolling, he needs to tell us why. Tell us why he thinks it is fair that his constituents should be penalised with motorway tolling. Why can Brendan Howlin’s Wexford constituents drive up the M11 without paying a toll?

I will be the first to congratulate Ged Nash when he does something useful about road tolling. In the meantime please spare us all the ‘mock outrage’.

I will be speaking on Road Tolls and explaining how we can get rid of them at the mayor’s Town Hall meeting on November 21 in the Westcourt Hotel. WE CAN DO THIS.
