Chord Road traffic issues need urgent action

-

THE Chord Road has seen a number of changes since the closure of Laurence Gate, some of which have been positive and some others that need to be reviewed, according to Louth County Councillor Pio Smith.

“Unfortunately, there are some motorists and delivery drivers who pay no heed to the health and wellbeing of others, they drive in a selfish manner and if anyone wants to observe this behaviour then spend five minutes standing at the bottom of Sandyford Terrace/Chord Road Junction,” Cllr Smith said.

“The section of road between Sandyford Terrace and Thomas Street is supposed to be one way, but there are many people who ignore this rule.”

The Labour councillor says he has witnessed delivery drivers on a few occasions turning into the Chord Road from Thomas Street, ignore the warning signs and then try to drive up Sandyford Terrace.

“I stopped a driver recently and explained that what he was doing was illegal and dangerous and he flew into a rage,” he added. “Needless to say, he got as good back as he gave out!” Cllr Smith said he had the town engineer down to visit the area recently and he agreed that the matter needs to be addressed.

“The options are to either increase signage regarding the one-way nature of the street or make this section a two-way run,” explained Cllr Smith.

“We need to address this quickly as there are a number of young families along this section of road with children playing on their bikes and if we leave it as is then somebody will be badly hurt”.
