Thomas Craig was well known trader
THE death occurred at the Cottage Hospital, Drogheda, on Tuesday morning of Mr. Thomas Craig, West St., Drogheda after a brief illness.
Deceased who was aged 77 years and had not been in his usual good health for the past four or five months, although out and about since then, was a well-known licensed trader and provision merchant and became severely ill in the early hours of Tuesday morning when at home to pass away a little later the same day in the Cottage Hospital to which he had been removed.
A native of the Lobinstown area in East Meath the late Mr. Craig had been in business in Drogheda for over half a century, serving his time to the licensed and provision trade under the late John Dolan at Sunday Gate, and the late Luke J. Healy at West St (in the premises now owned by Mr. McCann). Subsequently he took over the business of the late Mr. Duffy at 79a West St., and has since carried on a successful trade in same premises.
Possessed of a genial and very good-humoured disposition, deceased was exceedingly popular amongst a wide and representative clientile especially from the rural areas convenient to the town and was also held in the highest esteem and respect of a large circle of friends and acquaintances in Drogheda.
Fond of sport of various kinds he was a keen supporter until quite recently of racing, coursing and football. In his earlier days he was a noted cyclist and even when past the 70 mark, in years enjoyed long cycling expeditions on Sunday and Thursday afternoons. His association with the Commercial Club in the Mayoralty House went back a great many years and was maintained until a few days before his death.
The late Mr. Craig is survived by his widow, four sons and four daughters, to whom deep and widespread sympathy is extended.
