Donal O’Neill is star Delvin hooker

-

Drogheda rugby team face yet another kingsize task on Sunday next when they travel to play Mullingar in the second round of the Provincial Towns Cup. And the fact that Drogheda had no game on Sunday last — their game with St. Mary’s second team had to be called off— is not going to help their chances one bit.

There was, however, some measure of compensation from the fact that they put in a rigorous training spell and should certainly be fit enough to last what will surely be a tough eighty minutes against Mullingar.

Drogheda showed impressive form when overcoming Portlaise in the first round two weeks ago but it would be foolish to suggest that the title is theirs for the taking. They, more than anyone else realise that the standard in this competition is improving every year. But they are not without hope.

The opposition is something of an unknown quantity as they will be making their first appearance in this year’s competition.

Drogheda will be without their out-half Mick Leneghan, who injured himself in the game against Portlaoise. This will be a b|g blow to their chances and it now seems likely that Michael Craig will move out to take over from him with Arthur Mullan reverting back to the centre and Greg Tully coming in at wing forward.

It should be a close struggle but if the game goes true to form, then Drogheda should advance.

A special bus will leave Drogheda and anyone interested in making the journey, the return far is 10/-, should contact Stephen Phillips, Schwers. Delvin v Wembley

On Sunday last, Delvin were hosts to an English XV, when they played Wembley who were over for the Ireland v England match at Lansdowne, the previous day.

This was a very exciting game to watch, with kicking and rucking from both sides. In the set scrums Delvin were much superior and Donal O’Neill hooked almost every ball.

Delvin’s backs were bad with the exception of Michael Delaney on the wing, who had a great game.

The final result was

Delvin, 3 points.

On Sunday next, Delvin play their first cup match against Roscrea at Mosney. The kick-off is at 3 p.m. After the match, the visitors will be entertained in the Pavilion at Mosney : Wembley, 6 points;
