O’Mahony’s and Kells setting pace

-

JUST two teams, Navan O’Mahony’s and Gaeil Colmcille, have full points following two rounds of the A League Division 1.

O’Mahony’s recorded their second big win with a 2-14 to 0-4 victory over understrength Moynalvey on Friday night.

The town side had Ruairi O Coileain back following a stint abroad and the former county player kicked a number of fine scores. David Bray was also in fine form for the winners, who led 0-9 to 0-1 at half-time.

Brian O’Hanlon accounted for six points as Gaeil Colmcille overcame Ratoath 2-9 to 0-7 at Grangegodden. Stevie McManus struck for an early goal and it boosted the Kells men to a 1-4 to 0-5 interval lead.

Dunshaughlin are the only other team in the division who remain unbeaten following their 0-8 apiece draw with Skryne. Mark Battersby hit six of the Skryne points, including the equaliser.

Newly-promoted Oldcastle caused the upset of the day when they defeated county champions Dunboyne 3-12 to 1-15 following an amazing second-half revival.

Dunboyne had 10 points on the board before Oldcastle got off the mark and at half-time it was 0-13 to 0-2. Colin Hawdon kick-started Oldcastle’s revival with 1-1 on the restart and a succession of points helped Oldcastle into contention and they led for the first time when Hawdon pounced for his second goal. Lee Healy accounted for the winners’ third goal late on.

Donaghmore/Ashbourne bounced back from a first-round defeat to easily overcome Summerhill, 3-13 to 1-8. Boosted by a Conor Ryan goal and five points from Liam Shaw, the ‘Hill led 1-7 to 1-3 at the break despite having midfielder Micheál Byrne sent off.

Their only point of the second half came from Shaw as the Ashbourne men took control with their numerical advantage. Gary Sweeney’s goal left the teams level and Ashbourne kicked on after that, with Darragh McGovern, Dylan Brady and Andrew Tormey all accounting for scores.

In the remaining game Simonstown defeated Na Fianna 1-13 to 2-6 and the latter team are rooted to the bottom of the table with no points from their two outings so far.
