Covert CCTV call for Mell after incidents
MOBILE covert cameras may be installed in Mell car park to target thefts from vehicles and illegal dumping.
A number of incidents have taken place in recent times and the matter was raised at last week’s area council meeting.
The latest involved the theft of a catalytic converter from a vehicle. Cllr Richie Culhane said the theft had taken place during the day and gardai were investigating it.
‘People need to be vigilant about where they park. It takes two minutes to take a converter off with a small instrument. They can cost €1,500 to €2,000.’
He said Mell had no cameras and he asked for a few to be installed.
Engineer Mark Johnson said that cameras were expensive but they could look at mobile cameras. The biggest issue was the power supply.
Cllr Joanna Byrne said she had asked for a clean up to be done in the car park at the previous meeting and it had been done twice, but it was a constant fight and it had become a litter blackspot.
She also asked why there was no bins for the disposal of wreaths and flowers in St Peter’s graveyard. She was informed that was an issue for the parish, rather than the council, and Cllr Frank Godfrey said he knew there used to be bins but they were being used for dumping.
