Hopes of talks over pool issue

-

MAYOR Frank Godfrey has asked for mediation between swimming pool users, the operators and Louth County Council following a public meeting last week.

Up to 70 people turned out for the gathering, many expressing regret and anger that their morning slot had been changed, impacting on many of them.

In a welcome display of cross-party unity, Mayor Frank Godfrey, Councillor Pio Smith and Fianna Fáil Drogheda local election candidate Anthony Moore met the group to hear the concerns of members of the Aqua Aerobics Group in the Aura Leisure Centre .

Speaking at the meeting, the members explained that they come from all over Drogheda and its hinterland in South Louth and East Meath to participate in aqua aerobics but the earlier time slot means it could break-up.

Speaking to the Drogheda Independent, Anthony Moore said “It was clear from talking to the members that this was not just an exercise class for them. It is a social outlet and there’s great camaraderie amongst the members who enjoy chats over tea and coffee and even organise trips abroad and outings together. And for many of the elderly members, it’s the only chance they have to get out, socialise and have some fun and exercise.”

It is now hoped that a meeting between all the bodies will take place in a bid to iron out the issues.
