Annie McEntegart from Nun’s Walk and her life as a nun in San Antonio

-

FROM time to time I came across a perfect ‘what happened to....’ candidate and I think Sister Mary Infant Jesus, formerly Miss Annie McEntegart. 37 Nun’s Walk, Drogheda, is one.

As a young girl, she attended St. Patrick’s School and the Presentation Convent School before departing Cobh for the USA in about 1930, ending up serving the Holy Ghost Order in San Antonio, Texas, where she was a teacher for many years.

During the Second World War, the inhabitants of Beaumont, Texas, were very kind to the sisters, particularly the Irish people. A generous benefactor was Mr. J. J. Dempsey, a native of Co. Wicklow. In the 1940s, Sister Mary paid a visit to Mrs. Joseph Qulnn (nee Molly Delany). a daughter of Mrs. Delany, Chord Road, and also spent a few days with her son Paddy who resided at Astoria, Long. Island, New York. She also met Miss Mary K. Rourke (Mrs. Ryan) believed to be a native of Hardman’s Gardens, Drogheda.

During a voyage on the Queen Elizabeth from New York to Southampton, Sister Mary was pleased to meet the celebrated Irish tenor, Christopher Lynch. Also on board the ship were Barry Fitzgerald and Oary Grant and Miss Geraldlne Fitzgerald.

Sister Mary Bernadette, a member of the Sienna Convent community, was her sister.
