Ramparts upgrade works

- By FIONA MAGENNIS

THE extensive €300,000 programme of upgrade works at The Ramparts walkway will be completed within the next month it has been revealed.

THE work to the Boyneside Trail began in the middle of July, during which time it was not accessible to pedestrians or cyclists.

There was a brief hiatus during Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann before work resumed in recent weeks.

Funding was provided earlier this year to carry out the upgrade works and provide a walkway from Dominic’s Park in Drogheda as far as the Mary McAleese Cable Bridge where it then links up with the Boyne Trail.

The upgrade includes widening the path to allow for full pedestrian and bicyle access, laying ducting for lighting along the 2km stretch, cutting back hedgerows and a full resurfacing programme.

The work at the Ramparts was raised by Councillor Kevin Callan at the September meeting of Drogheda Municipal District when he asked for an update on the work and what the final project entails.

Work on the Ramparts has been underway for about six weeks, stopping for the duration of the Fleadh, an official for the council said at last week’s meeting.

He said the ongoing works include cutting back hedgerows, totally resurfacing the area from Dominic’s Park up to the Rathmullan Road and putting in ducting for street lights along the full stretch of the scheme.

The official said drainage will also be improved and the area will be expanded so it will provide the a full cycling and walking experience.

He said the cost of the project is in the region of €300,000 and there are a further four to six weeks of work left before it is finished.
