Come and be part of the Slane Men’s Shed experience

-

THREE years of planning and hard graft will come to fruition with the official opening of Slane and District Men’s Shed at Slane Industrial Estate by Minister for European Affairs, Helen McEntee TD, on Saturday, September 28th at 2pm.

The men’s shed is designed to provide an outlet for older men who have some time on their hands and will be open to men from Slane and all of the surrounding parishes. During research, the SDMS team identified that a large population of such men exists.

The premises comprises a well-equipped workshop, large recreation area, kitchen, computer room and a small fitness room. The activities can be varied from having a cup of tea and a chat to becoming involved in workshop activities, or engaging in a wide range of recreational, craft or wellness activities.

John Deacon, Chairman of SDMS stressed that ‘whilst a small group of us have been involved in building the place, the activities will be in accordance with members wishes for their benefit and the benefit of the wider community.’

The original idea began as a concept by Slane Community Forum and in December 2017 a premises was very generously provided at Slane Industrial Estate by the landlord, Mr Noel Monaghan of MCM Engineering. Pat Doyle, another founder, explained ‘a small group of us then engaged in a fairly arduous two year programme to renovate the premises as a workshop area and add another building for recreation and other activities.’

All of the activities were generously supported by a large number of individuals and organisations who provided donations, grants and a wide range of other supports. The result is a well located, comfortable and well equipped premises which it is hoped will support the activities and be of benefit to the local community.

This Men’s Shed will evolve over time, in accordance with members wishes. Considerable research has been undertaken to create an initial flexible, comprehensive design for building and equipment for a wide range of activities to include - conversation, games, health and wellness, arts and crafts, wood carving, IT/computers, gardening, cooking etc.

Slane and District Men’s Shed will be open Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm. All are invited to come along and see the place, have a cuppa and a chat and are also welcome at the official opening which is an Open Day for the community.
