Tones win pulsating clash

-

WOLFE TONES NA PIARSAIGH 1-11 3-2

CALM heads and sheer determination pushed Wolfe Tones over the line in a pulsating Under-16 Division 2 Final in Darver.

The fight was clear in the first 10 minutes and some cheap frees conceded by the opposition saw the Tones lead 0-3 to 0-1 after 15 minutes.

After that there was a crazy two minutes of play which began with Joe Comiskey driving through the heart of the Na Piarsaigh defence and setting up Callum Sheedy to slot the ball under the keeper.

That joy was short lived, however, as Na Piarsaigh replied immediately with a goal of their own to leave two points between the sides once more.

Tones flexed their muscles again with a perfect response as scores from Eoghan Brennan and Joe Comiskey and some inspirational defending left the half-time score 1-7 to 1-1 in favour of the Drogheda boys.

The wind picked up in the second half and added to the cagey style of the game, but Tones kept their advantage around the sixpoint mark.

That was until an all-out onslaught by Na Piarsigh yielded two goals, with another Eoghan Brennan point in between.

The gap was now down to a single point, but Tones held their nerve and Na Piarsaigh’s increasing frustration was summed up when they were reduced to 13 men with time almost up.

Two very late scores from Eoghan Brennan and a beauty by Callum Sheedy were met with a huge roar from the Tones supporters and eventually the long whistle sounded to confirm victory for the Drogheda side.

Incredible fight and spirit won the game for the lads tonight and the scenes at full time really does show how much our little club means to our community, brilliant by all.

Congratulations to Dinger Pat all the lads and everyone in the background.
