DUNDALK

CONGRATULA­TIONS to Caolan Rafferty on winning the One Finance-sponsored Dundalk Scratch Cup for the third time in four years on Sunday.

Caolan finished nine under par, five shots ahead of Warrenpoin­t’s Colin Campbell. Four Dundalk players finished inside the top 20, with Eoin Murphy ninth, Conor Curran 16th and Aaron Grant 18th.

There was also an excellent Scratch Cup debut for Zak Alderdice who finished 27th, while Mark Gorham and Shane Hession also made it inside the top 40. Thanks to those members who volunteere­d their services on the day to run the competitio­n and congratula­tions to our greenkeepi­ng staff for presenting the course in magnificen­t condition for the event.

All roads will lead to Westport on Friday for the All-Ireland Barton Shield semi-final against Rosses Point, with the winners advancing to an afternoon final against either Warrenpoin­t or Limerick. It is hoped that as many members as possible will make it to Mayo to cheer on the team as they bid to go one better than last year when they lost to Athenry in the national final.

Josh Mackin’s second appearance in the colours of Maynooth University proved memorable when he won a play-off to claim the R&A Student Summer Series at Carton House last Friday. He shot rounds of 74, 70 and 69 to finish on 213, three under par, and it took an eagle on the last by Jack Broun to force a play-off, but Mackin subsequent­ly won. Eoin Murphy finished 20th.

Brendan Lawlor has taken a major step towards qualifying for EDGA Dubai Finale, which will be played alongside the season-ending European Tour DP World Tour Championsh­ip in November. Lawlor won the German Disabled Open in some style last week and remains third in the World Rankings.

Three days after his Walker Cup exploits, Caolan Rafferty was in Lahinch as part of the Ireland team hoping to win the Home Internatio­nals for the fifth time in six years. They had to settled for third after defeats to England and Scotland and a win over Wales. Caolan and his foursomes partner Tiarnan McLarnon won their matches against England and Scotland, while Caolan won his singles matches against England and Wales to finish the week with four points from a possible six.

It was a good week for the Rafferty family as Caolan’s cousin Kyle finally got a day when it all came together last Wednesday as he shot an impressive 42 points to win the Open Singles competitio­n. The five-handicappe­r also claimed the best gross accolade.

The annual Dungreen Cup, which is a long-standing friendly gents competitio­n held annually between members of the Dundalk and Greenore clubs, takes place on Thursday September 26th in Dundalk, commencing at 12.04pm. The timesheet is now open on BRS system and cards must be collected in the pro shop. There is no entry fee, but a donation of €5 is recommende­d, with all monies raised going to The Birches.

The timesheet for the Adult & Child Competitio­n on Saturday September 28th is now available in the pro shop during the day and in the bar in the evening. The annual presentati­on of prizes to juveniles for summer competitio­ns will be held after the Adult & Child competitio­n at 7pm in the clubhouse. There will be a small contributi­on required towards the cost of food and soft drinks which will be provided on the evening.
