Don’t miss town’s big switch on!
WEST Street will be the place to be this Friday night as the town’s new Christmas lights are officially switched on around 6.30pm.
The show gets underway at 5pm at St Peter’s Plaza.
A plan is now in place to upgrade the towns festive lighting over the next few years. As well as the existing streets, there are further plans to extend the upgrade to other areas downtown over the coming years.
All of this will be funded by the ratepayers, through the establishment of the BID Scheme (Business Improvement District).
Up to €40,000 has been spent on the lights this year.
After the big switch on, Santa Claus will also arrive by boat on the river Boyne, checking into Scotch Hall at 7pm.
Christmas is just around the corner, and Drogheda will be twinking a little brighter this year with the installation of brand new lights in the streets of the town.
This Friday evening, you can see for yourself, as the festive fun begins around 5pm at St Peter’s Church in West Street, culminating with the lighting up ceremeony, then followed by Santa’s arrival on his waterborne sleigh on the River Boyne at Scotch Hall at 7pm. There will be plenty of family fun on the day so don’t miss out on what should be a great afternoon for all the good boys and girls. For the first time in decades, Drogheda’s Christmas Lights will see proper funding, as a plan is now in place to upgrade the towns festive lighting over the next few years.
As well as the existing streets, there are further plans to extend the upgrade to other areas downtown over the coming years. All of this funded by the Ratepayers, through the establishment of the LoveDrogheda BID (Business Improvement District), While the LoveDrogheda BID will only be properly established next year when its funding stream becomes available, the interim board has arranged the necessary financing to invest in new lights in two of our town centre streets for this year with further improvements to follow in the coming years.
The estimated expenditure in Drogheda this year, inclusive of installation, insurance, transport, etc. will be in excess of €40,000. This represents a quadrupling of what has been spent in previous years. In the coming years funds will be made available to further improve and expand the displays with significant expenditure earmarked for upgrading the electrics and the catenary cables from which the lights are hung.
