THIS weekend, sees the launch of a weeklong celebration of traditional music in the region, with some of the finest musicians, singers and dancers visiting the banks of the Boyne.

Drogheda Traditional Music Weekend is now in its 21st year, and with the support of the Arts Council and Louth County Council, there is a special emphasis on having sessions accessible to family audiences in various venues and a focus on traditional singing due to the strong tradition locally.

“This is achieved through sessions in cafes, restaurants, public venues, heritage locations and through master classes and schools programmes,” said a spokesman.

“We also encourage musicians to stay in the town for the entire weekend to engage with local musicians and encourage impromptu sessions. The festival for over 10 years has hosted an extensive outreach element in local schools. This has proved incredibly successful with over 200 students experiencing concerts and residencies by some of Ireland top musicians.”

One of the highlights of the festival will be the legendary Andy Irvine and Donal Lunny for the annual headline concert at 8pm on Saturday 23rd November in honour of Caitlín Bean Uí Chairbre, who was instrumental in promoting the traditional music culture in Drogheda.

These two giants of the Irish trad scene will unite for an evening of great music, with a mixture of traditional songs and originals composed by Andy.

Wellknown talent Gerry Cullen, one of a group of traditional singers from Drogheda who have made a major contribution to the collection and promotion of traditional songs at home and abroad will also be joined by Sean Mathews, an accomplished solo singer, in a special event in the Tholsel on Saturday at 4pm.

It all kicks off this Friday with Set Dancing in The Morning Star, Tullyallen at 8.30pm. It will be followed by an informal music session hosted by Gary Matthews and Johnny Gray. Event information is available on Droichead Arts Centre’s website www.droichead.com.
