Unsightly railings removed from St Laurences Gate
THE railings around St Laurence’s Gate have finally been removed, the latest step in regenerating the area around the historic barbican.
The move has been warmly welcomed by local politicians who said it would help improve the area around the gate for both visitors and locals alike.
Last month Louth County Council (LCC) told local councillors in Drogheda that they were working towards removing the railings.
The railings were a protective measure for both pedestrians and the gate itself when traffic passed through the ancient structure.
Calls had previously been made by local councillors, including Mayor Paul Bell and Councillor Kevin Callan, to remove the railings to enhance the structure’s overall appearance.
Mayor Paul Bell remarked, “I am very pleased with the quality of work and speed in which the work was carried out having only motioned Council in October for these works to be actioned. I appreciate that all elected members of Council voted in favour of this small but significant project as we move forward in ensuring that the area surrounding the Gate is tastefully developed into an amenity whereby both our citizens and visitors can enjoy the splendour of Drogheda’s heritage jewel”.
Cllr Callan said that this was the first step of many in improving the greater area to form a plaza for visitors to the gate where they will be allowed to assemble and will be esafe from traffic.
The councillor said the removal of railings from St Laurence’s Gate is a fantastic move in the right direction in improving the area around the gate for visitors and local people alike.
