In-form Greenhills sides complete a clean sweep

-

OUR Lady’s College Greenhills enjoyed a clean sweep of home victories as four of their teams prevailed in Secondary School Association league fixtures played last week.

First into action were the Under-19A team against Dominican College, Griffith Avenue, and when captain Oyin Adelegan opened the scoring directly from the jump ball that set the tone for the game. The home side were 15-7 up at the 1st break and 35-9 up by half-time.

Ava Briscoe was in tremendous form, helped by Zoe Gardiner who was running the floor well, while Ava Prendergast and Gretta McEvoy kept things flowing on their introduction and Dominican returned home smarting from a 70-13 defeat.

The Under-19C team took on Dominican College (B) in Division 2 and went on to claim their first win after two heavy defeats.

They started well and Abigail Woods scored four of their six points to lead 6-2 after one quarter and 8-6 at half-time.

Aisling Doran was having the game of her life as she tormented Dominican in defence and picked up some nice baskets.

It did prove to be a low-scoring affair, but Our Lady’s worked hard to secure a 17-12 win.

Then on Wednesday morning the Under-16B team hosted St Paul’s from Tallaght. This was St Paul’s first year playing league basketball and their poor discipline saw one player fouled out inside the first quarter.

A single basket separated the teams at half-time - 10-8 - as ‘College’ found it hard to get to the basket due to persistent fouling, but they showed their running game in quarter three, scoring 22 points to just four by their opponents.

Point guards Lily Mae Harmon and Grace Woods were heroic in offense and were assisted by Katie Ryan in the scoring department as Our Lady’s ran out winners on a 38-14 scoreline.

The final game of the week also took place on Wednesday, with the Under-19 Division 1 team at home to Maryfield College.

It proved to be a tough, physical game, with 43 fouls in all being recorded, and a tight first quarter ended 5-4 in Our Lady’s favour, with Lynn Victory shooting well from the free-throw line.

The introduction of Keelin O’Reilly and Benita Assoua changed the dynamics of the game as Our Lady’s outscored Maryfield 14-4 in quarter two.

The home team were already down two guards before the game due to injury, and the loss of point guard Katie McCabe and shooting guard Lynn Victory due to persistent fouling let the opposition back into the game slightly, but that third quarter had done the damage and the Greenhills girls held on for a very well-deserved 31-23 victory.
