CLOVERHILL

PREPARATIONS are well in hand for the hosting of Captain Shane Muckian’s Prize Presentation Dinner in the clubhouse this coming Saturday Nov 23. A reminder to all those attending that Café Brew Dundalk will be serving dinner AT 8pm sharp.

With the course in great condition and the weather terrific players in week 2 of the 12 hole Christmas League were set to have the life of O Reilly as they battled to see who would be putting the Christmas Dinner on the table. The winning score of 26 points from last week was easily surpassed during Saturday’s early morning play as Daniel Hughes (3) set the bar at 29 points following his 2 under par round. Nial Smyth (8) matched the leading score but they were left in the shade as Damien Reilly (7) became the first player to reach 30 pts. The question was could Damien survive the Sunday morning full timesheet to keep the ham on the table. In another great day for golf Sunday’s best came from Peter Byrne (10) who had 27 thus leaving the Ham in Reilly’s, the Turkey via the countback in Hughes and the wine heading to Smyth’s. Round 3 of 7 will take place next weekend.

Round Four of the Seniors Winter League was played in very cold but dry conditions. It was a hot streak of form (3 birdies) from Brendan Hughes which helped him to victory over runner-up Charlie O Hare. There are 3 more weeks of the League to run with the overall 1-2-3 prizes very much up for grabs as there have been 4 different winners to date.

The club is holding a Texas Holdem fundraiser on Saturday Nov 30 in the Cross Square Hotel, Crossmaglen at 8pm. The winner is guaranteed a £1000 and entry fee is £30. For further details contact 30889580.

PETER McCaughey (20) won Sunday’s 14-Hole Singles Stableford competition with an excellent score of 34 points.

But thoughts of victory were far from his mind after he walked off the first hole having failed to score.

A two-point bogey at the second got him on the board and pars at the next three holes yielded a haul of 10 points which put him right back in the competition.

Another two-point bogey at the par-five sixth was followed by three-point pars at the seventh and eighth before he finished the front nine with a two-point bogey for an impressive 22 points heading into the final four holes.

Two points were gained at both the 10th and 11th, before he parred the par-five 12th for three points and bogeyed the par-three 13th for two points.

He then jumped from the 13th to the 18th for the 14th hole of his round and a three-oint par on the last was enough to take McCaughey beyond three players who finished up on 33 points and give him the overall victory.

Mickey Coburn (10) was one of those on 33 and he took Category 1 by a point from Charlie Monahan (10), while Brian Crombie (19) needed a countback that went back to the final two holes before he edged out Gerry Byrne (19) after both had finished on 33 points in Category 2.

Conor Byrne (21) took Category 3 with 32 points from Anthony McGuinness (20) who finished with 31, while the evergreen Peter Rogers went around in 28 points for the day’s best gross score.
