Kerr bags a double as Drogheda beat St Mary’s

DROGHEDA UNITED 2 ST. MARY’S (East Wall) 1

Drogheda United were best at United Park when defeating St. Mary’s (East Wall) by the odd goal in three in their Athletic Union League tie.

Played on a very slippery pitch, which eventually resulted in the ball becoming heavy, made good football difficult but both teams served up a spirited display and held the interest of the spectators to the end.

Goalkeeper McManus has certainly solved their net-minding problem which was really the cause of some of the early-season defeats. Many of his saves in this game were really praiseworthy efforts and he was blameless for the score that beat him. Centrehalf Murtagh has improved considerably and his clearances are lengthy and accurate. After a shaky start wing-halves T. Mohan and Lally settled down and, with their pivot, made a formidable half-back line. J. Mohan was a sounder full-back than Hoey who, however, saved one or two dangerous situations.

Although the forward line was short a man for the first twenty minutes, when Quinn came on in the vacant inside-right position, it lacked proper finish throughout and only left winger Kerr could be termed a success. He was really the matchwinner, scoring both goals, the first in the tenth minute following a corner-kick by outside-right Clarke, and the second five minutes from the end when he raced through along the wing from the centre of the field to score the winner and best goal of the match. Of the remainder Quinn tried hard without success but Gough and Purvis hesitated too much and enabled the St. Mary’s defence to clear at will.
