Christmas Special at the TLT on Friday

Boys graduate to perform with the men!

-

THE recent success of the Drogheda Boys Choir has bridged a 60 year gap and re-stablished a strong choral tradition in the town of Drogheda.

A Junior Boys Choir had been a treasured feature of church services in St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Drogheda, probably since the present church was built until, sadly, the choir came to an end in the 1970s.

Many of the members of the present Drogheda Male Voice Choir had their first taste of choral singing as boys in St. Peter’s Boys Choir, some even as far back as the 1940s. The setting up a Junior Boys Choir in 2017 has therefore revived the town’s strong tradition of boys choral singing in the town.

The setting up a Junior Boys Choir has paid rich dividends to the men’s choir, and earlier than they had expected; two of the boys who were part of the new Boys Choir from the beginning have already joined up with the men’s choir.

Conor Loughman’s is one of these protégé’s and has now found himself the owner of a new baritone sound and has recently graduated to the men’s choir. He will make his debut with the Senior Choir at its ‘Christmas Special’ in the TLT on the 13th of December. Dominic Connor is another who is in the middle of a voice change but still commands a wide range.

He has been invited by Musical Director, David Leddy, musical director, to join the men in the TLT to take a solo part In the Bleak Mid-Winter. Another outstanding young musical talent, Eoghan Curran, who is a grandson of long standing Male Choral singer, Seamie Branigan, has graduated to the men’s tenor section of the senior choir.

All three of these young choristers will be proudly introduced to the audience at the Drogheda Male Voice Choir’s ‘Christmas Special’ in the TLT on Friday the 13th of December.

Drogheda Male Voice Choir Musical Director says; “The initiative shown by the Senior Choir, through Chairman, Tommy Finegan and Tom Murphy in 2017 of reviving a Boys Choir has been a revelation. The progress they have made under their Musical Director Sharon Gaynor has been phenomenal and to have three of them feature with the Senior Choir is just fantastic”.
