Lynn seals win for Greenhills in marathon game

-

THERE were mixed fortunes for Our Lady’s College teams over the last week as teams in three age groups faced Dublin opposition in the Secondary Schools Association Leagues.

Tuesday saw the Under-19B Division 1 team and the 2nd Year B Division 2 team travel to St Dominic’s in Cabra.

The Under-19s - top of their league - played first, and after a dismal display the final whistle sounded with the teams tied at 14 points each.

Three minutes of overtime ensued in which neither team scored and then there was a further three minutes of extra time. The first two of those minutes were also scoreless before Cabra belatedly broke the deadlock. However, the home side then fouled twice, and Rachel Beirth and Eimear Clarke each nailed one of their two free throws to tie the scores again.

It looked like yet another period of extra time would be required, but with six seconds left Lynn Victory was fouled and she converted one of the two free throws to seal a dramatic 17-16 victory that leaves her team top of the league going into the Christmas break and with a place in the semi-finals secured.

The 2nd Year B team were taking to the floor for the first time this season and they travelled with only nine players, as one failed to arrive that morning.

Our Lady’s still led 8-2 at the first break, with captain Leisha Archbold and Queen Agunloye sharing the spoils, but at the start of the second quarter one of the players was unwell and the game had to be conceded to St Dominic’s.

The remaining players finished the game and to their credit managed to win 31-11, but the points went to Cabra.

On Thursday it was Cabra’s turn to travel to the Boyneside with another two teams.

The 2nd Year A Division 1 game was first and the Boynesiders had no answer to St Dominic’s club player who showed her dominance in the final two minutes to seal a 23-13 victory for her team.

Last to take the court was the Under-16B Division 2 team, and looking to bounce back after their defeat the previous week they wasted no time in taking control, and led 10-4 at the first break. Grace Woods was in flying form, scoring six points in that quarter.

St Dominic’s fought back and edged the second quarter 7-6, but Our Lady’s took control in the third and scored 19 points to put the game beyond their opponents.

Katie Ryan and Alma Harrak were fighting for scores, but it was Woods’ day as she scored 15 points for her team to ensure a 49-26 a winning margin, second place in the league and a place in the semi-finals after Christmas.
