HEDGECUTTING

IT is nice to see that many sections of the hedgerow through the townlands of Kilbreckstown, Lisdornan, Cooperhill and through Beamore Cross have now been cut back in the dead of winter, presenting a pleasant appearance along the route to Drogheda via these smaller country roads. Well done to Kevin, the `hedgecutter` for carrying out some very neat and tidy work.

SONAIRTE CHRISTMAS FAIR

A Christmas Craft and Food Fair will take place at Sonairte, the National Ecology Centre at Ninch, Laytown on Sunday December 22nd from 11am until 2pm; the place to go to pick up that last-minute unique gift.

CHRISTMAS GIVING TREE

The St. Vincent de Paul will be collecting gifts in both parish churches in Stamullen and Julianstown. Parishioners are being asked to leave all unwrapped gifts in the churches during Mass times only.

Gifts will also be collected at St. Patrick`s National School and all gifts kindly collected will be distributed locally by the fantastic St. Vincent de Paul. This is an exceptionally worthy cause and particularly at this time of the year so all donations will be gratefully received, with many thanks.

WINTER SOLSTICE TALK AND EXHIBITION.

Community Historian Brendan Matthews will present a talk on the Mid-Winter Solstice and the people who resided across the greater Boyne Valley area in pre-historic Ireland at the Governors House, Drogheda Museum, Millmount on Sunday, December 15th. An exhibition of mythological scenes and characters from ancient Ireland will also be on display, including scenes and characters from the epic tale of the Táin Bó Cúailnge (the cattle raid of Cooley) and from the adventures of Fionn Mac Cúmháill, etc. Hand-crafted by Brendan Matthews using a traditional early 20th century foot-pedal fretsaw, these unique and intricate crafts will add to the presentation talk on the day.

Doors are open to the general public from 2.15pm and the Presentation talk will begin at 3pm and will last around half-an-hour or so. This is a free event and everyone is welcome to attend.

BENEDICTINE MONASTERY

The Benedictine Monks at their Monastery in Silverstream are asking you to perhaps join with them on Sundays December 15th and 22nd for Advent Vespers and Benediction sung in Latin with Gregorian Chant, followed by tea in the Monastery Gatehouse. All are most welcome to attend.

GAYBO HOWARD TRIBUTE

A fitting and well-deserved tribute to the late Gabriel (Gaybo) Howard was delivered recently at a cycling function held in the City West Hotel in Dublin. Gaybo was inducted into Cycling Ireland`s Hall-of-Fame for his immense contribution, dedication and his overall commitment to his beloved sport over his lifetime. It was a proud and honourable moment for Kay Howard and the family and also for the Stamullen Road Club Cycling Squad, the backbone of Gaybo`s creation.

It is also good to remember Gaybo Howard at this time of the year as he had helped so many charities, families and individuals; a man who had contributed so much throughout his neighbourhood, community and far beyond.
