25 years of Slane historical society

-

SLANE History and Archaeology Society recently celebrated their siver anniversry in the Conyngham Arms Hotel Slane, exactly 25 years after the first meeting of the Society there in November of 1994. The day started with Mass in St. Patrick’s Church Slane, remembering the departed members of the Society and continued in the afternoon with an event in the hotel hosted by Eddie Fleming, the Society’s chairman.

The event was opened by Mr Wayne Harding, Cathaoirleach, Meath County Council, and the guest speaker was Sheila Crehan, a founder member of the Society who gave a full account of the main events over the past quarter century showing images of many gatherings. Sheila recalled that first meeting, presided over by Fr. Joe Dooley. Michael Leahy was elected chairperson, Bill Roman assistant chairperson, Sheila Crehan secretary, Myna

Doherty assistant secretary, Madge Fortune treasurer and Terry Trench, historian, honorary member. More than 40 people attended the initial meetings and a good many of them were present for the celebration The society took on many projects over the years including publication of two books - “The Old Frequented Ways” and “Reflections” which deal with many facets of the history and archaeology of Slane and its environs. Slane sculptor and artist, John Cassidy, was celebrated by the Society and there was also a project on Slane National School. There were many memorable trips and visits to historical sites, and hundreds of talks given by both local historians and eminent authors and researchers who both informed and captivated their audiences. It was an afternoon of memories, enhanced by beautiful music from Mary Kelly, harpist, and the violins of Gerard Doggett (a former chairman of the Society) and Patrick Reilly which made the occasion very special. Interspersed with the music were stories of times past by Michael Kelly, Jimmy McComiskey and Frank Lynagh.

Looking ahead, the Society which recently acquired Charitable Status, is intent on broadening its appeal to all age groups in Slane and surrounding areas. It will endeavour, among other objectives, to research and present the history of the area based on the Conyngham Papers in the National Library which provide insights into the lives of the Conyngham tenants and staff particularly during the period 1800-1830. Anyone wishing to contribute to this research activity will be most welcome as will anyone wishing to join the Society.

In 2020 the Society will continue its series of Spring and Autumn talks and Summer site visits. Details will be publicised in the local media and on website http:// slanehistoryandarchaeologysociety.com/.
