‘TRINITY GARDENS HAS BEEN FORGOTTEN ABOUT’

Roads, some untouched in 90 years, are cracking up

- By HUBERT MURPHY

RESIDENTS of one of Drogheda’s oldest estates fear that somebody will be badly injured, due to the severe state of pathways and roads in the area.

The majority of the roads in Trinity Gardens have not been upgraded in 90 years and they are showing the years of neglect.

Many of the residents are elderly, some in wheelchairs, and they have to walk on a cracked and uneven road surface - because there’s just one footpath in the estate.

There are hundreds of people living in the estate and the neighbouring Brickfields - which is accessed via the same bumpy roads.

‘We have approached the council about it and they say there’s no money,’ local resident Aidan Casey (pictured) stated.

But that is not a good enough answer for many people who risk tripping and falling on the road, which dips down three inches in places.

‘A lot of the road is now sinking. It is a danger for people and we’ve pointed that out to the council,’ Aidan remarked.

In recent weeks, the residents have also had to endure yet more roadworks - the third time the road into the estate has been dug up in the past year.

That adds to the array of gullies being created. Some of the older ones have dipped very badly, while much of the old style concrete road has cracked up.

‘ The residents here simply want proper, safe roads, somewhere they can walk without fear of tripping and causing injury. We can’t believe it has been allowed to get this bad,’ Aidan added.

The estate is listed as dating from 1931 and much of the same infrastructure, including crumbling and dangerous steps down to the Fair Green, have not been upgraded in that time.

‘Are we the estate that the council have forgotten about?, Aidan continued. ‘We will continue to raise these issues until action is taken.’
