MALE VOICE CHOIR PERFORM FOR THE MMM COMMUNITY IN TOWN

-

THE lovely peaceful and tranquil surrounds of the motherhouse of the MMM’s in Beechgrove Drogheda, resounded to the beautiful strains of the Drogheda Male Voice Choir recently when they performed their now traditional New Year Mass and Concert for the retired sisters.

The evening commenced with a Mass, once again celebrated by St Mary’s Parish Priest, Rev Phil Gaffney, during which, the deceased members and friends of both the MMM’s and the Drogheda Male Voice were remembered.

Sister Helen Stagg welcomed Musical Director, Mr David Leddy, and his choir to the now annual New Year Mass & Recital and it was as an occasion, she commented, the sisters always relish as being the highlight of their year.

This is now the 6th year the choir performed at the motherhouse and as chairman Tommy Finnegan explains; “It all came about at our first Christmas Concert in the TLT in 2014 when the MMM sisters could not get tickets for the concert because it was sold out. We decided to facilitate them with a repeat of our Christmas Concert here in the motherhouse. The choir members have built up an excellent rapport with the retired Sisters and it is now one of the highlights of the year to come here to their motherhouse at Beechgrove and provide them with nice music. We’re also indebted to Father Phil for celebrating the Mass and of course the hospitality extended by the lovely Sisters is always very much appreciated”.

A poignant moment during the remembrance of loved ones who passed away, was the inclusion of renowned Music TeacherTeacher, Miss Ann CrillyCrilly, who had just passed away earlier that day, by Musical Director, David Leddy. In a touching brief homily, he paid tribute to her wonderful legacy over many years of teaching music to literally thousands of children and referred to himself and his uncle Ciaran, also a member of the choir, as being past pupils of the Crilly School of Music.

Another feature of the Mass & Recital this year, was the live streaming of the event which was streamed to a world wide audience and was enjoyed by the extended fraternity of the MMM’s in faraway places.

The evening was brought to a close by Sister Ursula Sharpe, who referred to the generosity of the Drogheda Male Voice Choir for the past six years to come among the Sisters and provide such a lovely spiritual and musical evening for them. She concluded by saying that they were already looking forward to next year.
