Men’s Shed needs a hand!

- By ALISON COMYN

DROGHEDA Men’s Shed is in a spot of bother, and is seeking the help of the local community!

Their dilemma at the moment is they need someone with a spare shipping container or two hanging around, to help out with a little storage problem. The popular local social outlet is moving to new premises soon, but unfortunately the building they are moving into has very little storage space.

“As we will be very short of storage space, we wish to appeal to any person/builder/manufacturer or anyone who may have one or two shipping containers (regardless of condition) who might donate them to our Shed,” explains PRO Eugene Clinton. “Irish Cement Ltd has kindly given Drogheda Men’s Shed the use of these premises, which have a large outdoor area. So as well as our many existing activities we plan to start using the surrounding land for several outdoor projects.”

Men’s Sheds are well proven to open up a new dimension in life for retired and semi retired men.

The group has been in their current home on the Donore Road opposite Lidl for about six years, sharing the premises with the Alzheimer’s centre, and the Drogheda Girl Guides, but they all have to find new homes now.

“Soon we hope to start beekeeping soo,” adds Eugene, “and we would ask anyone who may have unused hives or beekeeping equipment to consider donating them to our Shed.“Gardening is also on our to do list. Here again we would ask anyone who may have unused tools, motorised cultivator and drive on grass mower to donate them to our Shed”.

Drogheda Men’s Shed is extremely grateful for everything they receive and can guarantee that every donated item is used in us helping the community.

The only criteria for joining the Men’s Shed is that you are male, over 45 and independent enough to look after your own basic needs. The average age of members is 65 to 78, and there is no pressure or judgement at all on men who come in – they can just sit and listen if they want, or take part in one of the several activities that they do.

The Drogheda Men’s Shed has become one of the flagship groups in the country, one of around 420 nationwide. They had quite humble beginnings in 2012, with just some small premises in Greenhills, until they eventually outgrew that shed about a year or so later, but now they are on the move again.
