Masterful Rooney wins Singles title

-

FORMER PDC professional tour player Keith Rooney hit top form to win first prize in this year’s Kevin Campbell Memorial Singles Competition, held in Drogheda’s Westcourt Hotel.

There was a huge number of entries and it took some time to get down to the business end of the tournament, but eventually it reached the semi-final stage where Rooney defeated last year’s champion Mark Clinton (Lantern Bar) 4-1 and Greyhound’s Neil Barry overcame Ollie Thompson 4-2.

In the decider, though, it was largely one-way traffic as Carranstown player Rooney overcame Barry with an impressive run of darts.

This year’s Plate champion was Damian Grimes (Matthews, Collon) who defeated Thomas Brodigan of Greyhound in the final, while the Youths title went to Aidan Keogh from Ashbourne, who beat Slane’s Ryan Timmons.

There was prize-money for all players who reached the last-16 stage thanks to some generous sponsorship and the Fosters Duleek & District League would like to thank everyone who sponsored dart boards and spot prizes for the local charity raffle - and the committee members and various helpers who put in a huge effort to make sure the tournament was a success.

The organisers would also like to thank the Westcourt Hotel for all their help and assistance.

On the day of the tournament the Duleek & District League remembered Kevin Campbell and three other stalwarts of the league over a long number of years who also passed away in recent times. Jackie Fallon, Jackie Curran and Francie Gibney all played for Threeway/Tally Ho teams. RIP.

With the Singles competition now completed, attention switches to the upcoming Doubles, which will be hosted by the Westcourt on Sunday March 1st. The entry deadline is Thursday February 27th, with the draw taking place that same night.
