KNOW YOUR PARISH
During the second week of May, back in 1934, a very lively game of Gaelic Football was played on the hill of Bellewstown, between the men from the `hill` and a team from Gormanston. The following is an extract account of that game which was reported on within the pages of the Drogheda Independent:
`With the wind advantage, Bellewstown led the attack and after a fine bout of combinations, Plunkett hit the net. Play resumed and Courtney, following a melee in the Bellewstown square, made a spectacular clearance from which Collier and Flood got going and following a neat pass into the square Boyle fisted in another goal for Bellewstown. Whearty followed this up with a point, but Gormanston returned, Murray passing the ball that ended with scores from Whelan, McKenna; both of whom sent points over the bar. Gormanston then looked dangerous when the ball yet again entered close into the Bellewstown half, but again, Courtney came into the picture to clear once more from which Bellewstown got a point by Reilly.
‘During the second half Gormanston played some attacking football but sent a number of wides over the end line, while Bellewstown were also awarded two fifties and both were also sent wide. Bell also played well for Gormanston. Following, what is known as a `scrap`, a player from each side was sent to the line and no further incidents took place for the remainder of the match which ended, Bellewstown 2-2 Gormanston 0-2.
