SAD TIMES IN MONASTERBOICE.
As last week came to a close, Monasterboice was a much, much sadder place than it was at its dawn. The parish lost two great people, one, tragically, in the spring of his life, one, in his autumn, but both dreadfully missed by their now bereft families, friends and beyond.
Mark Hoey’s passing is just too painfull to digest. Mark was just pulling out of the harbour, about to embark on the journey on life’s ocean, when he was cruelly taken from Ollie, Marguerite, Damian and Edel.
I had the pleasure of having him play for a few under age Mairtin’s teams that I coached and whilst he was a very gifted player, this paled into insignificance compared to his downright decentness as a young man. He was an absolute young gentleman and a pleasure to deal with.
Good God, Ollie and Margarite, words seem, and are, so inadequate, but, please, let me reiterate the heartfelt sympathies that you have heard over these past few, nightmarish days. Your grief is immeasurable and will be only navigated around and never surmounted.
Willie Winters had lived a full, energy filled, interesting and interested life, but still his passing left sadness in its wake. He was the quintessential great husband to his pre-deceased wife, Eileen, a doting father and grandfather to Marie, Joe, Ollie, Lisa, Kim, Aoife, Aoibhinn and Jamie and a parish participant to the core. His love of football was unquestioned, of music unequalled and life in general, contagious. He was a noted card player, Knock pilgrimage organiser, political observer and a neighbour with few equals.
Anna Marie, myself and our, at the time, young family, got to know Willie and Joe when they opened up their shop in Tenure. True, they ran a good shop, but this was second to the auld chat and subsequent banter that took place within the premises. It was more than once that one would go into the shop for the proverbial litre of milk, and, by the time Louth’s GAA woes were sorted or Bertie or Charlie were knighted, the milk had began to curdle.
God’s rest, Mark and Willie. To the families, believe me, the parish, shares, albeit unequally, your abject loss.

MATT LEAVY COUNTRY SINGER & DANCE - Wee County Vintage Club are hosting an evening and dance with special guest Matt Leavy, one of Ireland’s best country singers on Friday, February 28th, 2020 starting at 9 PM. Admission is €10 per person and supper is served.
Presentations on the night will be made to representatives from Acquired Brain Injury Ireland and Dundalk Meals on Wheels from funds raised by the club’s threshing event last August.

A message from and Tourism Towns ...
Great to see some signs of Spring around the area. We planted several bags of daffodil & other bulbs last Autumn and they are now making an appearance. Thanks to everyone who supported our ‘Sponsor a Tree’ campaign.
We will be arranging a date for the tree planting in the coming weeks. We have two Community Employment positions available. 19.5 hours per week. Duties include DIY, planting, mowing, painting, litter control etc. Applicants must be over 21 years and in receipt of a qualifying Social Welfare payment for 1 year or more. Please contact

Work has started on replacing the fencing at Ferney Park. We recently received funding for the project from the Louth Leader Partnership.
Thanks to everyone who helped out on the recent Litter Pick. There were 20 bags of rubbish collected in just one day. This is an astonishing amount of rubbish thrown around and we are pleading with everyone to please bring your take-away bags & paper cups home and not throw them from your vehicle. If anyone is out for a walk, perhaps take a bag with you to collect any litter you come across. Let’s take pride in keeping our community litter free.
We are holding a Presentation Night on Monday February 24th at 8pm in the Monasterboice Inn - please join us and celebrate our achievements over the past year.

PARISH NEWS
Ash Wednesday is 26th of February. Masses with the blessing and distribution of ashes is at 10 am and 7.30pm. During Lent all weekday Masses are at 7.30pm.
We invite you to pray both prayers: Our Pastoral Area Prayer for Drogheda and our Parish Prayer for reflection for our parish and for our diocese. These prayers can be found both on our Parish Facebook page and in our Parish bulletin.
On March 9th Mellifont Parish Church in Tullyallen village is hosting an open evening to reflect on where we as a parish community and where might like to go in terms of future plans and possibilities. It is an opportunity for all of us to come together and explore ideas for the future of our parish.
We are looking for you to get involved in whatever gift or talent you might have, from making a cup of tea for visitors, to assisting in liturgy and faith development; from meeting with young mothers to welcoming new people to the parish, we want to hear your voice.
This meeting will take place in the Parish Hall, Tullyallen, Monday March 9th at 8pm.

COUCH TO 5K IS BACK
Great to the Glen Emmets Couch to 5k back again this year. Training starts Monday, 24th February and will be twice a week for 8 weeks.
Each session has a coach and lasts one hour on Mondays and Thursdays at 8pm. This caters for all abilities and levels of fitness as all participants are divided into groups with people of similar ability.
The cost for the whole program is just €30, just look at how fit you will be at the end.
This has been running in the Glen Emmets for a few years now and they have had nothing but positive feedback from their participants. If you are going to do one fitness project this year, make this your goal, you have nothing to fear and you will not regret it.
SLIMMING WORLD TIMES
Slimming World classes are on in the Glen Emmets Clubroom every Thursday at 6pm.
Amanda will be there to help everyone get back on track after the Christmas season. Now is the time when the summer body is created.... Whether you need to lose a few pounds, few stone or just try and maintain what you have, the door is always open for new and returning members. There is no judgement, just encouragement and support from your friendly leader Amanda and all the members who are all in the same boat as yourself.
The hardest part is deciding to go, and walking though the door on the first night but everyone else there has had that feeling, you have nothing to lose but a whole lot of satisfaction to gain from your weekly Slimming World meeting.
GLEN EMMETS OPERATION TRANSFORMATION PROJECT
The Glen Emmets would like to encourage all their members & community to get up and get walking!
In conjunction with RTÉ One’s Operation Transformation, they are encouraging the community to get walking in our very own GAA club. This started a few Saturdays ago and even if you missed the first few you can still go along next Saturday and every Saturday at 10am until Feb 29th.
Why not come out and walk and bring a friend! The Glen Emmets walking track is just over 500m long.....walk it 10 times.... and you’ve done 5k! Whether there is 5 people or 50, just arrive and walk! A community that walks together, stays together.
LOTTO RESULTS
Results for the Glen Emmets Lotto held 11th February. The Grand Prize Draw was for €1,900 and there was no winner. The numbers drawn were 9, 11, 26 & 30.
The Lucky dip winner was Ciss Traynor who receives a ‘Wee County’ Double House Draw ticket worth €100.
Next week’s draw is for €2,000. Tickets are on sale in Centra Tullyallen or any committee member or now you can play online.
TULLYALLEN MEN’S SHED
The Tullyallen Men’s Shed meets up every Tuesday and Friday mornings 10 am till 1 pm They are in their new premises beside the Glen Emmets GFC Clubhouse . Everyone has something to offer in the Shed, all new members will be most welcome.
DANU CULTURAL INSTITUTE LOOKING FOR HOST FAMILIES
It is that time of year when they are planning for the coming summer. Danu are looking for approximately 10 families to add to their ever-growing network of families.
The students are with the institute for classes and activities, Monday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm and the company director is located in Drogheda throughout the duration of the camp. They pay up to €210 per student per week.
