Cushinstown has plenty to celebrate as honours roll in
ZOE Mohan and Donal Kearns did their club Cushinstown AC proud when winning their events at the recent National Universities Indoor Track & Field Championships in Athlone.
Mohan, representing DCU, won the women’s 8kg weight for distance competition with a throw of 8.25m.
In the colours of TCD, Kearns finished first in the Men’s combined events competition - comprising of the 60m hurdles, 1,000m, long jump, high jump and shot putt - with a total of 2,678 points.
Meanwhile, it was a great night of celebration at the Meath County Athletics Board awards in the Ardboyne Hotel Navan on Sunday where Cushinstown underage athletes Laura Bolster, Loclainn Harris, Amy Callaghan, Niamh Quinn and Aoife Jane Lenehan, who all won medals at National championships in 2019, were presented with plaques noting their achievements.
There was more Cushinstown success in the track & field awards, with Jane McDermott and Doireann Power joint winners of the Under-11 to 13 Field Award, Loclainn Harris winning the award for the Under-14 to 16 Track, Amy Callaghan triumphing in the Under-14 to 16 Field category and her brother Lee Callaghan matching her achievement for the boys.
Aine O’Sullivan won the award in the Under-17 to 19 Field category, Zoe Mohan won the Junior Field section and Donal Kearns won the Senior Track award.
Along with all her other sporting success throughout the year, Elizabeth Morland was honoured for her achievement at the European Under-23 Track & Field Championships in Sweden last summer.
And in the 2019 Interclub Track & Field League, Cushinstown AC were delighted to maintain their 2018 placing, coming second overall.
As well as celebrating on Sunday evening, some of the club’s juvenile athletes were also competing on Days 3 and 4 of the Leinster Championships in the National Indoor Arena at Abbotstown.
On Saturday, Ciaran Herdman competed brilliantly at Junior level, winning the high jump, coming second in the triple jump and seventh in the long jump. Then on Sunday he added to his medal haul with a silver in the Under-18 high jump and gold in the Under-18 triple jump.
Also on Sunday, Amy Callaghan, Niamh Quinn and Amy Bellew all threw very well in the Under-17 shot putt event. Amy Callaghan threw a PB of 11.97m to win gold, while Niamh also threw a PB of 10.68m to win the bronze medal. Amy Callaghan jumped very well in the Under-17 high jump, coming fourth.
