McCormack in the driving seat

THE Greenhills BC Junior Doubles round robin tournament continued last Tuesday night with some entertaining matches played in front of a good turnout of members.

Caitlin Floyd and Leo Mc Donnell went two up after two ends against Tadg Reilly and Noel Mc Donnell, but the latter pair responded superbly and by the fourth end they had turned it around to lead by four shots.

Caitlin and Leo went on an allout attack over the next four ends to eke out a one-shot advantage, but still it wasn’t enough in this rollercoaster match as Tadg and Noel battled hard under pressure and secured a three-shot victory with the help of two splendid shots.

Megan Devin and Lauren Dykstra were pitted against Ciara Floyd and Thomas Devin Healy in a match that was always going to produce fireworks.

It proved evenly contested throughout, with Megan and Lauren going two up after three ends, only to find themselves trailing by the same margin two ends later.

Eventually the two pairs found themselves back on level terms with two ends remaining and the final stages proved to be a cagey affair. Both teams showed nerves of steel and the match ended in a draw after a great game of tactical bowling from the four fine juniors.

In the final match of the night Diarmuid Loughman and Chloe

Dykstra stamped their authority on the game from the start to go three up after two ends against Robert Mc Cormack, who was once again playing on his own with four bowls.

After four ends Robert had got back on level terms, but Diarmuid and Chloe quickly regained control to go three up once again.

This was a supreme test of character for Robert, but he responded well and in the final end he found his rhythm and showed great mental strength to eke out victory at the death by one shot.

The result means Robert currently leads the competition overall by two shots.

Meanwhile, the third-round winners in the club’s Charity Senior Doubles tournament were Paddy Griffin and Alice Leonard, Valerie Barron and Bridie Maguire, Teresa Craig and Anna Farrell, Tony Winters and Gertie Griffin and Eugene McKenna and Tom Devin.

On the Oriel Zone scene Greenhills travelled away to Killanny

BC for their league game last Tuesday night and put in a good performance.

They didn’t get the rub of the green but still secured two valuable points as they battle to stay in the First Division. Greenhills now have 33 points on the board, needing 40 points to avoid relegation, with three games to play.

Times of play this week: Tuesday - Juniors 7 to 8.15pm, Seniors 8.15 to 10.30pm; Thursday - Seniors 8 to 10.30pm.
