THE DAY A LORRY CRASHED INTO COLLON HOMES

A story from 30 years ago and I wonder has road safety in Collon really improved since then:

Two elderly Collon neighbours were shocked after a lorry crashed into their homes in the early hours of a Monday morning.

Sixty-year-old Jim Shevlin and Alice Gogarty, in her late 50’s, were awakened at around 7 o’clock when the out-of-control lorry spun off the Ardee Road and smashed into the houses.

Mr. Shevlin, who is President of the Collon Development Association, said the crash proved the need for a means of slowing down the traffíc passing through the village.

Mr. Shevlin told the Drogheda Independent that he was dozing in bed when he heard “a desperate crash of glass and saw a flash of lights” at about 7 o’clock in the morning. He jumped out of his bed and went out to see the lorry driver getting out. “I looked at the front of my house and saw it was ploughed out of it and the whole thing was in bits.”

Such was the ferocity of the bang that the front door was knocked off its hinges and ended up against the back door at the opposite end of the hallway.

Windows were smashed, lumps of concrete displaced and rain chutes left dangling. Mr. Shevlin, who was only six weeks old when his family moved into the house in the early 1930’s, said he had never received such a fright. He lived alone in thc house.’
