CIE bus depot by the Boyne was ‘thorn in the side’ of motorists

-

A great story from 1971.

‘WHEN the members of the Drogheda Harbour Board met on Tuesday morning, they had some hard-hitting comments, and advice, to mete out to cross-river neighbours, C.I.E. C.I.E’s depot, and buses, were claimed the board, a “thorn in the side” of most Drogheda motorists.

‘ The time had come, they felt, when the depot should be moved elsewhere, and their advice to C.I.E. was to look now for an alternative site.

‘Chairman, Ald. Peter Moore, suggested that now was the proper time for C.I.E. to look about for other accommodation, while plans were being made for the demolition of John St. He agreed with Commissioner Conor Lynch that the “other side” of John St., when demolished, would make a perfect site.

‘ The chairman said he realised that the depot would, of necessity, have to be sited somewhere convenient to the town centre, but the existing site was most unsuitable.

‘He agreed with the Harbour Master Capt. William Hanrahan, that the activities of the buses in the Bullring often contributed to the traffic congestion on the North Quays being prticularly bad at lunch-time periods.

‘Also criticised was the condition of the Depot area. Secretary, Lt- Cdr. George Worn, said that, in common with bus depots all over Ireland, it needed cleaning up. The chairman said that he had had complaints about the litter there. Most of this litter was gathered behind the stanchions and wire netting which the board had put up there to protect the possibly dangerous river wall.’
