Community rallies together in crisis with offers of help

- BY FIONA MAGENNIS

We may be living in uncertain times but one thing has never been more sure - community spirit is alive and well in Drogheda.

From free delivery services from pharmacies, supermarkets and restaurants to offers of help with childminding, lifts and shopping, the people of Drogheda have once again proved they are worth their weight in gold when it comes to a crisis.

While the global spread of the coronavirus and the decision by the government to close all schools and universities saw the public enter panic mode with shelves emptied and queues of up to an hour long at tills last Thursday, faith in humanity was restored as offers of help and support poured in for anyone affected by the current situation.

Social media was inundated with kind and generous offers of help from all sections of the community as the town rallied around to show it’s united spirit in the face of adversity.

The Drogheda Dolls page set up a thread for people to offer help and support and within hours there were more than 80 offers from people in all walks of life who wanted to do what they can to ease the pressures caused by the extraordinary situation created by the Covid-19 pandemic.

From those offering time, collection services, grocery shopping, deliver and lifts to those ready and willing to mind children while the schools are closed so parents can continue to work, there was no end to the kindness shown.

One local woman offered help to anyone needing a childminder and said she could provide meals, help with schoolwork and do lots of fun activities.

Residents in Grange Rath have also rallied round their neighbours via the Grange Rath Community Unite Facebook Page with members listing their names and the area of the estate they live in so that anyone close by can contact them if they need any help or support.

?? ?? Grange Rath has come with a dedicated Facebook page, where residents offer each other support.
