Dermot Gaffney’s mighty Dromin

-

Self proclaimed Manchester United fan Dermot Gaffney did what Alex Ferguson is hoping to achieve at Old Trafford this season by leading his club to a second successive league crown last week on another glorious night for Dromin United.

In the end they could relax going into the clash with keen rivals Square United in Ardee, knowing that St.Laurences draw with Newtown the previous evening had given them the title again and they showed a lot more of their old class to win 2-0.

In recent weeks the run in has proved nervous and trying for Gaffney and his.. team but goals from Derek.Hickey and John Doyle blew away the cobwebs against Square and renewed the challenge for next season.

But Dromin remain strong in their belief that summer football is not the way forward, for them at least, and if the Mcath League AGM decides to bring in the summer game in two years time then they won’t be part of it.

‘It’s all up in the air really,’ stated satisfied manager Dermot Gaffney. ‘If the Meath League decide to go summer then I can’t sec us taking part but that could be in two years time so we’ll be back to defend the title next year at least.’

‘ The club has decided to stick with the winter game and that’s our future,’ he remarked.

The past season has witnessed the same level of consistency that Gaffney demands of his men every year although the start and conclusion of the campaign was less than spectacular.

‘We picked up one point from six going into September and then went on a run where we were unbeaten until mid April and that won it for us. For the past six weeks we’ve been nervous and just managed to scrape a few 1-0 wins but I realised that when we beat Newtown at home recently the league was set up for us.’

‘I got much more satisfaction this year than last because every game we went into the other side upped their performance. I couldn’t believe it when other teams managed to beat them quite convincingly but they always played a lot better against us.’ The addition of Paudie McEntaggart in goals was a boost to the defence which is the meanest in all nine divisions.
